Websites made in Wordpress are called as Wordpress sites. While Wordpress is primarily a blogging platform, plenty of non-blogging websites have come up from WordPress.

WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it's probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (or CMS*) in existence today. One needs to carefully consider the following 3 key ingredients prior to developing a Wordpress website.

It is also important to remember that since all 3 (Key ingredients) are made by different entities ,they require regular maintenance by an experienced Wordpress individual or company to keep things in order.

  1. Wordpress Core
  2. Wordpress Themes
  3. Wordpress plugin(s)

Wordpress Core: All Wordpress websites are built on top of the WordPress core. Every WordPress site is powered by the same core, no matter how differently they operate or look. Think of this as the engine pf your car.

Wordpress Themes: In WordPress, a theme is a collection of files used to define the appearance and display of a Wordpress site. These are often customised to suit the business requirement. Think of this as the chassis that wraps around the engine.

Wordpress Plugins are software applications (some free to use and some that require a fee) that introduce specific functions to WordPress websites. These are often customised to suit the business requirement. Think of these are all the extras like leather seats and heated steering wheels.

*All modern websites need a CMS (content management system) to manage content (on the website) and users (that have access to the website). CMSs are capable of creating and editing content, and allow you to administer users and assign different permissions to each.
